Universal form of armor , helmets are especially designed and created
to offer a defensive covering for the head. Generally made up of metal ,
it is a hardened-steel shell with an inner liner and weighs of around 1
to 4 pounds. History
Historically , Ancient Greek soldiers made use of oldest helmets built from thick leather or bronze to protect the head from sword blows , low-velocity musketry and flying arrows. At that time, they were purely military equipments. In 1990's, most of the helmets are made from resin or plastic, which may be strengthened with fibers such as aramids. In order to protect the neck , some helmets have a sort of extension made of leather strips called pteruges, common in the Middle East. In the Napoleonic era , ornate cavalry helmets were used and afterwards in late 1915 replaced by the new French Adrian helmet.
Uses
There are several other sides of helmets such as
- In the civilian life they are used for recreational activities and sports such as American football, ice hockey, and rock climbing
- They are used in dangerous work activities such as construction, mining, police riot duty .
- They are used in transportation like motorcycle helmets and bicycle helmets.
Regarded as a form of protective gear, helmets are worn over the head to protect it from injuries. Still now, soldiers wear helmets made from Kevlar instead of metal to protect the head from bullets and shell fragments. Some of the helmets contain protective elements attached to them such as face visors, goggles and ear plugs .
Constitution
During Bronze and Iron Ages , helmets were constructed from leather, bronze ,iron and forged steel. Today's armed forces often make use of high-quality helmets made of ballistic materials such as Kevlar, which have excellent bullet and fragmentation stopping power . Some of the helmets have good non-ballistic protective qualities to defend the wearer from injuries such as concurring shock waves from explosions, motor vehicle accidents or falls and many more.
Styles
Disdain of different designs and requirements, helmets try to assist the user's head through a mechanical energy-absorption process. Thus, their structure and protective capacity are varied in high-energy impacts. Besides different types of helmets , other styles of them are :
- Bicycle helmet : It is a helmet intended to be worn while riding a bicycle designed to fade impacts to the cranium of a cyclist in falls while minimizing side effects such as interference with peripheral vision.
- Welding helmet : It is a protective headgear worn by
welders.
- Diving helmet : It is a protective headgear worn by
professional divers engaged in surface supplied diving.
- Motorcycle helmet or Crash helmet : It is a defensive
helmet for motorcycle riders .
