Helmets are referred to as a piece of armor, usually made of metal,
designed to protect the head. Spanish helmets of the late nineteenth
century were influenced by German styles, since the military success of
the Prussians in the Franco-Prussian war was widely admired. Mounted
service (cavalry or horse artillery) was denoted by a plumed helmet,
while infantry helmets carried a spike. The first Spanish-designed steel
helmet was also called the 'Sin ala' (without wings). It had a
good protective shape, but it was considerably disliked at the time
because of its unappealling appearance. The 'Trubia' helmet was designed and made by the Spanish government arsenal. They were used by both the Nationalist (Franco) and Republican factions during the Spanish Civil War.
The 'Con ala' ('with wings') it is a development of the helmet that has almost vertical sides and back with none of the outward side.
The Eibar was the lighter and simplified version and was introduced 1938 being primarily used by militia units rather than the Spanish military.
